Alternatives to Suicide

People commit suicide when they want absolute disconnection from society. That’s what it boils down to fundamentally. It’s hard to imagine the magnitude of mental torment one has to go through to be brave enough to take their own life. Looking at it from a biological perspective, it’s absolutely against the laws of nature. There are no other animals who take their own life, it’s either fight or flight, so at the end of the day it’s about living another. It’s not enough to live a lifespan, so we animals reproduce to pass on our genes throughout millennia. As human beings, committing suicide ends our only opportunity of experiencing the captivating beauty of the cosmos and our attempt at understanding its complexity.

If disconnection from society is what we crave when we find no reason to live, there are other ways to do so that are overlooked. Some may say it’s actually a blessing to reach the stage in life where you want no part in society. When we reach that point, we are free to experience the glory of the universe without any strings attached. The earth literally grows everything we need to exist out of the dirt. One can live a fulfilling life as a primitivist. You can find everything you need to survive for free in nature. If you don’t want to carry on with life as a cog in the vicious machine of modern society, there is always the option of living as an individual as part of nature itself. One may feel small, one may feel insignificant compared to the grandness of the universe, but one must be mindful that we ourselves are part of it because the atoms we are made up of come from dead stars. We should feel big because the universe is made of us, and that’s how we are relevant.

The concept of society is just brand new when thought of in respect to our evolution throughout the epochs. We fail to consider achievements of man throughout the ages, and so blinded by temporary and insignificant problems of modern society, we end our lives. From a scientific perspective, it is unthinkably incalculable to estimate the probability of life happening, let alone where human achievements stand now, thanks to evolution. So it is foolish to end one’s own life because of hardship. It makes more sense to be killed by a wild animal in the wilderness than to be killed by your own hands.

We should use what we see in nature as guidelines. Suicide must never be an option. You get one life, which should be statistically impossible to begin with, so although however selfish this may sound, use it to experience the infinite beauty of the cosmos — i.e., yourself.
